Not a Clue

imagesToday is the final stretch of juries for the year. For the last two weeks we have heard/seen every performance student in the department work their way through either a scene or a monologue. Truly, we saw the good, bad, and ugly of the department. It was great to see that for a few actors they were finally beginning to pull their classes of voice, momement, acting, and analysis together and create a good scene. All of the parts were beginning to be sewn together.

Howevever being seen and being heard was exactly the problem that many others faced. It is hard to believe that after a year to two of training that we were unable to hear and sometimes see anything happening to the scene. We were seated only 12 feet or so away in a classroom and nothing intelligible was coming out of their mouth. It was hard to offer them much of a critique after the scene. The buck rather stops when you cannot see and cannot hear. It became easier to see who had possibilites for the next few years at school. Talent may come and go but an actor’s awareness of where they are physically and vocally is either there or not. I am not sure if all the warm-ups in the world can change those circumstances.
