Small Thank You

unknownIn the midst of a normal day – in the crazy that becomes one class morphing into another – in the shuffle of papers in and the papers out – in the midst of the excuse notes to come – to go – and to do either and both earlier and later it happened. I saw that he had been standing in the back of rhe room unusually patient, waiting and quiet that he caught my eye. In my brain I was flashing through all that had to do with him. Was he early? Was he late? Was he to leave early or to leave late? Did he have a test or paper for me – – or was I to have a test or paper from him? Did I ask him to stay and see me? Did we make an appointment? Yeichs! A teacher really ought to be more on the ball then this . . .

Then it happened. He simply came and told me how much he was enjoying the class and learning at the same time. He was grateful. Just that. Grateful. Admittedly I had to feign a formallity and professionalism in my response of, “thank you” but in that moment my heart danced a wee dance and gave him a hug. Not the time or place to do it – but I hope he got how his small thank you helped me move through the afternoon with much more joy!
