Time to Walk the Halls

I have a growing curiosity to walk down the halls of the academic building and actually see what is going on. At our school we have one, very new building that houses most of our academics. It has been so long since I have been in one of those “readin’, writin’, ‘rithmetic” classes, that i am not sure what even goes down.

When I ask my students what’s going down in one of their academic classes they so easily fall on the answer of, “We do nothing.” “We just do worksheets.” “ We just listen to someone talk on and on.” “We always have a substitute” – to the extreme of “we have no teacher.” “our class just wanders through the wilderness with no guidance and no shelter.” Perhaps these are exaggerations. I certainly think so —right?

But I would love to see what it is like to be in a real high school class. Would I still be the valecictoriian if I was in school now? What has changed since the goals are all about testing? I really want to visit my youth to both experience both what my students face each day and what it would be like for teenage me to redo high school.

This new building is right across the alley? I could go over there any day ? ? ? I could . . .
